B4 – Tussock sedge communities:
Communities developed on sites at least seasonally covered by water and with medium nutrient supply. The vegetation growth generates a prominently undulating surface, which is a characteristic feature of these communities (the tussock-fen window mosaics). Peat formation is typical. The following species form dominantly the tussocks: Calamagrostis canescens, C. neglecta, Carex appropinquata, C. elata, C. lasiocarpa, C. paniculata, C. pseudocyperus, C. rostrata, Juncus maritimus, very rarely Carex buxbaumii, C. elongata. This habitat is rare, and it is gradually disappearing, the actual area in Hungary is only around 720 ha. There is 190-190 ha both on Tiszai-Alföld and on Dunai-Alföld, especially on Turjánvidék, in Őrjeg and on Nyírség, but sporadically it has several occurrences. It is almost completely missing from the climatically driest part of the Tiszántúl, dominated mainly by floodplains and loess ridges (there are surprising occurrences on the western edge of Hortobágy, in the middle of the puszta of Borsodi-Mezőség, and a third one on Bihari-sík, all in saline landscape). There are significant stands in the western part of the Dunántúli-dombság (185 ha), in the southern part of Nyugat-Dunántúl (85 ha), but the habitat is more infrequent in the Dunántúli-középhegység (29 ha) and in the Északi-középhegység (42 ha). Its stands practically disappeared from Hanság (4 ha remained). Although it is straightforward to identify tussock sedge communities, some small stands, mainly the ones with reed invasion, could have avoided the documentation.
