F2 – Salt meadows:
Tall grass meadows that have seasonal water cover at the beginning of the vegetation period and developed on solonetz or solontsak meadow soils. Characteristic grass species: Agrostis stolonifera, Alopecurus pratensis, Beckmannia eruciformis, Glyceria fluitans subsp. poiformis, Alopecurus geniculatus, Festuca arundinacea, Elymus repens. Characteristic other monocotyledons: Carex distans, C. melanostachya, Juncus gerardii. The dominant monocots are accompanied by the dicots that are typical in saline habitats. After mowing the latter ones greatly support the identification of the habitat. This is the most frequent grassland habitat in Hungary; its actual area is approximately 93000 ha. 78% of the stands are on Tiszai-Alföld (72400 ha), almost exclusively on solonetz soils. Data from Dunai-Alföld (19800 ha) include the stands of the solonchak-solonetz regions on Duna-sík, and of the solonchak meadows in Kiskunság. The habitat is infrequent in the Dunántúli-dombság (60 ha), on Kisalföld and on Nyugat-Dunántúl (altogether 600 ha, around Lake Fertő and along Répce River), as well as in the Északi-középhegység (110 ha, mostly around Szerencs). Its presence is uncertain in the Dunántúli-középhegység. It is easy to recognise this characteristic habitat, although it has several transitions towards the meadows of drying floodplains and towards the Molinia meadows.
